"I didn't abandon him" - Teenage stowaway's father speaks (PICTURED)

Two weeks after his son flew from Benin City to Lagos in the wheel compartment of an aircraft belonging to Arik Air, Daniel Ohikhena’s father denies claims that he abandoned his family.

Little is known about Daniel Ohikhena, the 13-year-old stowaway who flew from Benin City to Lagos in the wheel compartment of a plane belonging to Arik Air, by his schoolmates at Ogbe Junior Secondary School in the Edo State capital.

Shortly before his celebrated escapade, Daniel’s mother, Mrs. Evelyn Ohikhena, had withdrawn him from a private secondary school for want of money to pay his tuition fees. She had enrolled him in OJSS, which was about 500 metres from her residence.

Investigation by our correspondent shows that the teenager had spent only a term in his new school before embarking on the dangerous adventure. A source said, on condition of anonymity, that Daniel joined the school, popularly known as ‘Ezoti Junior’ just before the end of the third term.

A youth named Festus, who also resides in the same neighbourhood as the stowaway boy, said the latter was not popular in the area.

“We hardly know him. It was recently that we heard he lives in the neighbourhood. I have not seen much of him. He was very quiet at school. I have not known him for long,” he said.

However, events took a dramatic turn on Tuesday when the boy’s father, Osaigbovo Ohikhena, 44, materialised as if from nowhere. Earlier, his wife (Daniel’s mother) had claimed that they did not live together.

Mr. Ohikhena, who is a driver by profession, said he had been separated from his family for a year because of a misunderstanding between him and Daniel’s mum. But he denied the latter’s claim that he abandoned his family.

“I always pay my children’s school fees and provide money for their feeding regularly, contrary to claims that I abandoned my family. After I lost my job, I decided to move to a cheaper apartment and told my wife that they should move in with me. But she refused and continued to stay in the three-bedroom flat. My new residence is located on Siluko Road. I decided to come here (Government House) to tell the world that I am the father of Daniel.

“Initially, when I heard the news, I thought my son was kidnapped. But my wife said I should calm down and she promised to get back to me when everything is finally okay. I never dreamt of going to America nor am I married to another woman. My wife refused to give the DSS my phone number when they asked for it,” he said.

Giving an insight to what could have been responsible for the teenager’s strange behaviour, an expert and sociologist at the University of Benin, Dr Kingsley Omoyibo, described him as suffering from maladjusted personality, due to inability to mix. Omoyibo did not only warn against labelling the teenager a criminal because of his action; he recommended that the youngster be made to undergo rehabilitation.

Noting that what happened to Daniel could have resulted from his experience in his home, the don urged the boy’s parents to live up to their responsibilities in order to prevent untoward behaviour from their children in the future.

He said, “Like we learnt, the boy is a recluse. He has a withdrawn personality because he does not mix. This is why he acts the way he does. This condition is capable of making him do damage not only to himself, but to his siblings and his immediate environment.

“The boy needs to be rehabilitated. Although we cannot say that his attempt to stowaway in the wheel compartment of an aircraft is criminal behaviour, it is a devious act that must have been propelled by lack of adequate parental care. I do not know the background, but what we can extrapolate from this is that the home is not stable.

“You will find out that there is a lacuna in the upbringing of the boy and consequently, it has affected the way he reasons and appreciates societal issues. The way he sees the complexity of society is different from a child that has complete socialization. The boy is suffering from maladjusted personality.

“Indeed, that child, I still maintain, is not a criminal. In the process of maladjustment, he is exposed to odious things. For a child to keep all night watching films, it tells a lot about his state of mind.”

Now that a group known as De RAUFS has offered the teenage stowaway scholarship up to university level, it is the duty of his parents to seek ways of reshaping his character for a better future.

I Don’t Want To See My Dad – Stowaway Teen Tells Oshiomole

Edo State Government has taken custody of Daniel Ohikhena, the 13-year old boy who flew to Lagos in the tyre compartment of an Arik airplane.

POWER GRAB ANTICS: "I Am Sorry, Please Pray For Me" - Suntai Begs For Forgiveness

POWER GRAB ANTICS: "I Am Sorry, Please Pray For Me" - Suntai Begs For Forgiveness

At last, Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State has agreed to step down from office until he fully recovers from the injuries he sustained when the plane he piloted crashed on October 25, 2012.

His decision is part of the outcome of a meeting he had on Tuesday with a Committee on the state’s political logjam, his deputy, Alhaji Garba Umar; Speaker of the House of Assembly, Haruna Tsokwa, PDP leaders in the North-East and Senators.

Asking for forgiveness for grabbing power when he is not yet fit, Suntai said:
“I am happy to see you, please pray for me. Forgive me if I have made mistakes". When he shook hands the speaker of the House of Assembly, Haruna Tsokwa, he said, “Mr. Speaker, you know my problem. Please, I want you to help me to pray. God will help all of us."

Turning to the the PDP National Secretary in the North-East, Bala Endefo, Governor Sundai said, “This one, I have been quarrelling with him. Today, I forgive you.”

Chairman of the committee, Senator Hope Uzodinma, told journalists that although Suntai was recovering very fast, he was not in a good position to take full charge of governance in the state.

He said, “We have resolved the issue because it is just a family misunderstanding. We don’t have a crisis in Taraba. The governor is relatively very healthy and he has no disagreement with his deputy.

"In fact, he is in support of the fact that the acting governor should continue and should consult with him on major issues pending when he is ready to take over the full governance of the state. Taraba State has one united and strong government and the PDP is fully in charge.”

Suntai's wife, who many believe is the one stoking the fire, was also in attendance

President Jonathan is too weak, and Incapable as a leader – Asari Dokubo

The President of the defunct Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahedeen Asari- Dokubo, once again took a swipe at President Goodluck Jonathan, stating that the Nigerian leader is a disappointment to the Ijaw ethnic nationality.

Asari-Dokubo said Jonathan is weak and unassertive as a leader.

The ex-militant commander, who was reacting to the latest crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which has led to the factionalisation of the ruling party, lamented that Jonathan could not take bold and courageous steps to tame the dissidents.

Asari-Dokubo, who spoke in a telephone interview with our correspondent, regretted that Jonathan could not act like a typical Ijaw man, who is famous for boldness and exceptional courage.

He asked the President to be guided by an Ijaw famous saying, “Ama Doko Doko Biokpo,” which he interpreted to mean “small, small towns but they are very courageous and keep hope alive.”

Asari-Dokubo said he was unimpressed by “what he called poor response” to the crisis rocking the PDP by the Presidency and advised Jonathan to emulate former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who confronted and dealt with the dissidents in the party during his tenure.

He recalled how Obasanjo allegedly wielded power to quench the insurgency led by a former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori, within the PDP, against his re-election in 2003.

To this end, he asked Jonathan to stop further peace talks and negotiation with the dissident governors and their collaborators, including Obasanjo and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

He said Jonathan only needed to sit up and demonstrate uncommon courage to subdue his political enemies, adding that the crisis was orchestrated to frustrate his second term ambition.

Asari-Dokubo decried the recent statement credited to Abubakar Gumi that the killings in the North would stop as soon as Jonathan renounced his second term bid, adding that the cleric and his co-travellers were cashing in on the weakness of the President.

He nonetheless expressed the conviction that the plot against Jonathan would fail.

He said: “Jonathan is disgracing the Ijaw people and people of the South-South by negotiating with these dissidents. I am terribly annoyed by the way he is handling this issue, he is a disgrace. If he cannot withstand them he should tell us because there is no basis for negotiation.

“This is the time for Jonathan to act like an Ijaw man and he should stop disgracing us.

“Jonathan should hit them and he should tell us if he cannot hit them so that we can help him to hit them mercilessly. I have the potential to hit them hard. It is on record that I once held Nigeria hostage and Nigeria could not produce oil for 48 hours and my activities forced the prices of crude oil globally to rise by $30 one day. It was unprecedented and I can repeat it.

“The plot against Jonathan will surely fail but the President should be decisive with these people once and for all. Jonathan should assert himself as President and put these people where they should be. Obasanjo, who is leading these people did two terms and he plotted a third term.

“There should be no negotiation with dissidents. It should be total war, no retreat, no surrender and let us see who will run first. There is time for peace and there is time for war. This is the time to go into war.

“Jonathan should know that this is the time for war and if he cannot sustain the war, we will help him to sustain it. How many governors attempted to frustrate Obasanjo? Ibori and others were united behind Atiku Abubakar to frustrate Obasanjo and they failed because Obasanjo was strong, assertive, decisive and courageous.

“Jonathan should be strong to deal with them but whether he is strong or not, we are ready to support and stand by him. It is not a one-man battle but a total war and they must be totally vanquished.”

Besides, Asari-Dokubo asked Jonathan to hand over the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, to the ex-fighters in the Niger Delta for a decisive action.

On Amaechi, he said, “Let the security men step aside and let us see how Amaechi can come to Rivers State. Amaechi should not be protected because he has betrayed the collective interest of the Niger Delta.

“Jonathan should be decisive and look at the other way and allow us to stand on the streets for 24 hours and we will see whether this madness by Amaechi will not end.”

The Strike Will Continue, Even If It Takes Years Until Our Request Is Granted - ASUU

The lingering strike actionn embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Chairman, Kogi State University Chapter, Sylvester Osakwe Ukwuteno, has said the union is ready to fight until their request is granted, even if takes more than a year, as he noted that Ghana experienced a year and some months strike before the government came to their senses and the outcome is currently obvious, “we would do even more till our request is granted,” he stated.

Despite the N30 billion released to the striking university lecturers as payment for the earnedallowances, Ukwuteno, has said that the ongoing strike by the union will continue because the Federal Government has not strengthened its vision for the sector.

Speaking to Vanguard Learning in a telephone interview, Ukwuteno explained that if there are plans for the sector, government would have speedily concurred with the plea to innovate the sector being pursued by the union, adding that the pursuit of the union is to ensure that the country meets up with theinternational standard of education.

“We hope this would be the last strike that will surface on this particular discourse, hopefully if the government cares for education because we will not budge until our demands are met. The much emphasis of ‘no money syndrome’ is all lies as the president could convey over 300 entourage including himself, to China coupled with their allowances, welfare and other incentives, they should tell Nigerians where the money is coming from.

“The quest is not money motivated as speculated, but to ensure that facilities and other necessary equipment needed to update the students are made scalable for effective learning. Universities are currently operating with little or no equipment in the labs, making the labs non-functional for practicals, thereby sterilizing what is supposed to be practically inclined.

“It took Ghana a year and some months strike before the government came to their senses and the outcome is currently obvious, we would do even more till our request is granted.”

He therefore urged the public to join in the struggle by mounting pressure on the government to hasten up in its decisions because the students are the casualties now, but will be the benefactors if eventually granted.

Jonathan Rejects Obasanjo’s Peace Mission On PDP Crisis

There were strong indications last night that President Goodluck Jonathan may call the bluff of the seven aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Dr. Jonathan, who reportedly got angry at a meeting with PDP governors loyal to him on Tuesday night, asked them not to lose sleep over the party’s crisis.
It was also learnt that some forces in the Presidency are viewing with suspicion the peace moves initiated by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo because the aggrieved governors are seen as his “die-hard” loyalists.
The peace meeting called by the ex-President is scheduled for tomorrow in Abuja.
The President is said to have rejected Obasanjo’s peace moves.
A source, who spoke with our correspondent last night, said: “The President, after going through some security reports on the crisis, got angry and told the governors, ‘we will not lose sleep. Those who ignited the fire should go and quench it’.
“It is obvious that the Presidency is already closing in on those pulling the strings to divide the PDP ahead of the 2015 poll.
“I think the Presidency may damn the consequences. The next few weeks might be for dirty politics. There is a likelihood of tit-for-tat politics.”
At the meeting were Governors Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta); Ramalan Yero (Kaduna); Gabriel Suswam (Benue); Theodore Orji (Abia); Liyel Imoke (Cross River); Henry Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa); Ibrahim Dankwambo (Gombe); Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom); Idris Wada (Kogi) and Isa Yuguda (Bauchi).
Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs Ahmed Gulak and Deputy National Chairman of PDP Uche Secondus were also there.
A close aide to the president faulted Obasanjo’s intervention in the crisis.
According to the aide, “What is happening in the PDP has nothing to do with the President; it is not his headache at all and he is not losing sleep over it.”
The President believes that those who ignited the crisis should also look for ways to put it off. And from security reports, former President Olusegun Obasanjo is behind it; he cannot start a crisis and now pretend to be finding a solution to it.
“It is good that the current happenings are unfolding at this time; we now know those who are doing what, those who have been hiding their faces while creating problems – including security crises for the government. The government is studying the situation and will respond at the appropriate time.”
Obasanjo and the governors are battling to prevent President Jonathan from contesting election in 2015, the aide alleged, adding: “But the President will contest 2015 election and his achievements will speak for him.
“Those who are calling for revolution should better start preparing for it because President Jonathan will contest the election; Nigerians will decide his fate and not Obasanjo and the six or seven governors. Those calling for war should start preparing now,” he said.
